Pre-Primary Appreciation Day - A Report

The 'Appreciation Day' of the pre-primary section of Vidya Vikas Academy was held on the 11th March 2011.
The theme for the programme was 'Indian Harvest Festivals' in various regions and each of these festivals have a special spirit and verve bringing together communities to enjoy the sharing of gifts, festival foods, dancing and merry making.
This spirit and splendor was brought out through the festivals of 'Makar Sankranti and Baisakhi' by the students of Sr. KG. ABC, 'Bonderam and Pongal' by the students of Jr. KG ABC, 'Onam and Holi' by the tiny ones of Nursery ABC.

Holi Celebrated

The Pre-Primary children of Vidya Vikas Academy had a special assembly to mark the colourful festival of HOLI on 18th March 2011.
The teachers narrated the story of Holi celebrations. The children enjoyed playing Holi with 'pichkaris' and 'gulal' and singing and dancing to the beats of Dholaks.

Congratulations!! VVA shortlisted by British Council for Stage II of the Stamp Design Challenge

A team of ten students had participated in the Stamp Design Challenge organized by British Council in the month of December. They had submitted their paintings and a panel of three teachers (Tr. Hema,Tr. Shaefali and Sir. Sarvadnya) selected the best three posters out of ten.
Designs done by Kenneth Da Silva, Aanish Sawant and Sairaj Phaldessai were chosen. Mrs Hema Cacodcar, Art Teacher later guided the students and they were asked to work on another stamp poster design jointly, which was uploaded by Mr. Sarvadnya Sambari for stage I on the British Council Website.
Vidya Vikas Academy has been shortlisted for Stage 2 of the Stamp Design Challenge Competition. In this stage, the students will work with an international team which will consist of three schools from India, two from Srilanka and one from UK. The teams have been decided by British Council panellist.

Indoor board game development project

Students of primary classes developed a board game ‘Tic tac toe’ using materials such as old book covers ,bottle caps, gift wrapping paper etc.
Students of classes 5 and 6 developed various creative games using waste materials found lying around. This art activity enabled students to bring out their creative best. Mrs. Hema Cacodcar guided the students.

Special Children Outshine in Sports

Special Olympics, Bharat in association with Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Govenment of India and Special Olympics, Goa held the District Level Special Olympics on 3rd & 4th March,2011 at P.J.N Stadium, Margao Goa.Resource room children from V.V.A participated in this Special Olympics. The sports meet flaged off with a march past and the hoisting of the flag.
Our students made us proud by winning medals and certificates in different games held at the venue.
The following were the prize winners:
1. Tyla Coutinho & Andrea Fernandes won gold in badminton girls doubles
2. Valino Fernandes & Noel Sequeira won silver in badminton boys doubles
3. Tyla Coutinho & Velvitta Gonsalves won 2 silver in badminton girls single
4. Delbon D'souza won silver in badminton boys singles
5. Valino Fernandes won bronze in badminton boys singles
6. Velvitta Fernandes won bronze in badminton girls singles
7.Tyla Coutinho & Andrea Fernandes Velvitta Gonsalves & Natally Gracias won bronze in 4x100m Relay girls.
Medals and Certificates were awarded to the students at the venue. Principal Dr.Alan Rodrigues also congratulated the students at a special assembly held in the school on account of International Women's Day.
Mrs.Mamta Honnavar & Mrs. Tanula Cota e Fernandes trained and accompanied the students.

International Women's Day Observed

International Women's Day is observed throughout the world on 8th March. Vidya Vikas Academy also witnessed the Women's Day Celebrations at the campus on 08th March 2011.

A special assembly was conducted for the students of Classes 5 to 9. Students of Class 5 had a prayer service at the assembly. Principal Alan Rodrigues also addressed the gathering. Mrs. Wilma Alphonso co-ordinated the event.
On this occasion, Principal also gave away the certificates to students as well teachers who participated in the Pitch Black Project III organised by Creatiwity Works in Association with Sports Authority of Goa in the month of February. This project was an attempt to give an exposure of professional dancing to the under-priviledged children and also breaking the different barriers between the under-previledged and the previledged children bringing them together through this event.

VVA Students Participated in Women's Day Quiz

The Centre for Women’s Studies, Goa University orgainsed a Quiz for school students of classes 1 to 12 on the occasion of International Women’s Day on 8th March 2011 at the Seminar Hall of the Social Sciences Faculty Building, Goa University.

Vidya Vikas Academy had the largest number of students as participants comprising of 12 teams of 3 members each. The students were from classes 5 to 9. The preliminary round was a written round and 2 teams comprising of Julian D’Costa, Kenneth Da’Silva and Nikita Raposo and Karthika Pai Vernekar, Sailee Prabhudessai and Junaid Shaikh made it on stage for the finals. However they finished at 4th and 6th place respectively.
The quiz was very interesting and the questions framed basically focused on Women Power in the World. All the students were given participation certificates. Mr. Sarvadnya Sambari and Mrs. Shilpa Sukumaran accompanied the students and co-ordinated.

English Literature Festival Held

The English Language Festival for Classes 1-5 was held during the third week of February, 2011. For the first two weeks of the month, children were busy preparing themselves for a Nursery Rhyme Quiz, for classes 1 and 2. Classes 3, 4 and 5 were engrossed reading various fairy tale books, in order to prepare themselves, for the Fairy Tale Quiz. All the children were excited, enthusiastic and eagerly waiting for the competition. It certainly encouraged the children to catch up on their reading and I do hope, they continue to do so.

The English Language Festival for Classes 6-9 was held during the third week of February, 2011 for a fortnight or so, photographs with the names of twenty authors, Indian and foreign, were put up on the notice board. The students were thereby (hopefully!) encouraged to find out more about them.
Later, the students were given a list of titles/novels and asked to name the author.

English Projects - Reviewed

The students of Class 9B for their English Literature project, reviewed on 01st March, 2011, had an enjoyable time enacting scenes from Shakespear's "As You Like It' for their term project.

These projects were group projects and the students were divided into 4 groups. The studen also wore different costumes to suite their character in the play. Tr. Pamela Torcato reviewed the projects.

Drawing Contest

The State Council of Educational Research & Training, Alto - Porvorim organised Poster Contest to celebrate National Science Day. The theme for the competition was 'My Imagination About Science'. Three students from VVA participated in this competition of classes 5 to 7. The competition was held at the A.D.E.I office Margao on 9th February 2011. Master Kenneth Da Silva of class 7 bagged 1st place at the Taluka Level. In another drawing competition organised by Sri Sri Institute of Management Studies on the theme 'India Lies in You' which was held at Ravindra Bhavan, Margao on 25th February 2011, Master Sairaj Phal Desai of Class 7 secured 2nd place in the competition.
Mrs. Hema Cacodcar, Art Teacher of VVA was the staff co-ordinator for these competitions.
