INTER-HOUSE CRICKET CHAMPIONSHIP HELD

Inter House Boys Cricket Championship for Late Shri. H M. N. Gaunekar Trophy (Instituted in his memory by his wife, Smt. Sheela H. N. Gaunekar) was held at Vidya Vikas Mandal’s Grounds on 19th and 25th February between 1430 hrs to 1730 hrs.
The first match was played between Yellow (Raman) House and Green (Tagore) House on 19th February 2011. Dr. Alan Rodrigues, Principal of VVA was the chief guest and the teams were introduced to him by their captains.
Yellow House won the toss and they elected to field. In a 6 over match Tagore House scored 51 runs with a loss of 4 wickets.
In the reply innings Yellow (Raman) House could only scored 36 runs in 6 overs and thus the Green House won the match by 15 runs and reached the Finals.
In the Second Semi Final played on 19th February 2011 between Red (Vivekananda) House and Blue (Gandhi) House, the Red House won the toss and decided to field. In a 6 over match Blue House scored 73 runs. In an exciting reply match, Red House bowled out in just 4 overs with a score of 21 runs and thus Blue House won the match by 52 runs and ultimately reached the finals.

In the final match between Green House and Blue House, the Blue House won the toss and elected to bat. In a 10 overs match, Gandhi House scored 76 runs with a loss of 7 wickets. Rahil made a highest score of 33 runs.
In the reply match Tagore House crossed the 76 runs in the 8th over with a loss of 5 wickets and thus the Green (Tagore) House was declared as the Champions of the Late Shri. H. M. N. Gaunekar Trophy for the year 2010-2011.

ICSE Exams Begin

The Indian Certificate Secondary (ICSE)- run class 10 exams commenced peacefully today, the 28th February 2011.The ICSE board examination would come to end on March 24th.

Since it was the first day of the exams, Principal, Vice-Principal along with other staff members and students had a prayer service at the school campus, a few minutes before the start of the paper. We at VVA wish all the students of Class 10 of batch 2010-2011 ALL THE VERY BEST!!!

Global Warming - A cause of Concern

A workshop was held by TERI - The energy and Resource Institute at Vidya Vikas Academy on 18th February 2011. Ms. Shabana Kazi gave a talk and presented a powerpoint presentation to the students of class 6 and class 7 on Global Warming.
She explained to the students how Global Warming has always been there on our planet and that the very existence of life on earth is due to Global Warming. But due to excessive modernisation and development in all sectors we humans are now generating green house gases like Nitrous Oxide, Methane, CFCs and Carbon Dioxide and thereby increasing the temperature of the earth and adding to more problems.
She then conducted a Quiz having multiple choice questions which the students answered enthusiastically. She ended her talk with a documentary film showing the Forest and its conservation. The entire session lasted around 1 ½ hours.
In Vidya Vikas Academy the students from class 1 to 9 have started a campaign of collecting empty tetra packs and used plastic bottles from home and bringing them to school rather than dumping them in their dustbins .The school has also installed cylindrical composting bins at different corners of the school where the dried leaves, lawn grass and used paper will be collected and further converted into rich manure for the school garden.

SNEHADHARA - Outreach Programme Held

As a part of our social responsibility our school carries out an outreach programme called 'Snehadhara' every year. The basic objective of this programme is to inculcate feelings of empathy, generousity, brotherhood in our students. The pupils donated different useful non perishable items which were handed over to Sr. Valentina of Little Heaven, Colva on 25th February 2011.
The Vice-Principal, Mrs. T. Monteiro, Programme Co-ordinator Mrs. Reshma Raikar along with Mr. Sarvadnya Sambari, Mr. Neil D'Cruz and the students visited the orphanage. The students entertained the kids with songs and music and distributed sweets.

Activity Conducted to learn TIME

Students of Class 2 B conducted a activity to learn a new Chapter 'TIME' which was made funfilled and intersting by the teacher through a kinesthetic based activity.

This activity made the pupils engrossed and involved in the active and elaborative process of learning. Tr. Olga of Class 2 B conducted this activity.

Quiz - Activity for the month held

As a part of co-curricular activities for the year 2010-2011 a Science Quiz was organised at Vidya Vikas Academy for classes 6 to 8. Students from each class were given a written quiz comprising of 13 questions. In the written quiz Julian D’Costa from Class 7 had the highest score of 12 marks. On the final day an Inter-house quiz was organised between students of 6A and 6B and 7A and 7B.

The final was a General Knowledge Quiz done on a Power Point. The students in round one had the choice of various subjects like English, History, Geography, Sports, Films, Environment, Personalities and Logos. Each subject had four questions. The students could select a subject of their choice and had to answer the question that was displayed.
The second round was a mixed bag where questions were randomly chosen and answer had to be given. The Yellow house and Green house from class 6 and class 7 respectively were winners of the quiz. Tr. Shaefali Lendhay and Tr. Shilpa Sukumaran co-ordinated this activity.

AGMTA Competitive Exam

As a yearly feature, the AGMTA in collaboration with SCERT Government of Goa had organised a Mathematics competitive exam on 12th of December ‘2010. A total of about 3500 students from different schools from Goa appeared for the test that was conducted for students of class VII to X. Seven students from class VII, Eight students from class VIII and One student from IX of Vidya Vikas Academy appeared for the exam.
Mast Julian D’Costa, Mast Sairaj Phaldessai, Mast Kenneth Da Silva of Class VII stood First, Second and Third in Goa respectively. Mast Stefan Colaco stood 11th and Mast Amar Shetty stood 18th.
Miss Kartika Pai Vernekar, Nikhil Prem Rao of Class VIII stood 8th and 13th in Goa at the above competition. Tr. Shaefali was the staf co-ordinator.

Festival's - History Projects Reviewed

The students of Class 7 A & 7 B for their History project, reviewed on 11th Feb, 2011, made charts on festivals and enacted religious movements.
The topics were Easter, Christmas, Dusshera, Eid, Carnival and Holi, the students did a wonderful job acting out their part and also explained the significance of these festivals. It was a praiseworthy effort. Tr.Sandra Mesquita reviewed the projects.
